NAIFA Dallas 2001 Advisor of the Year
NAIFA-Dallas 2008 HALL OF FAME
Mel Meyers graduated in 1961 from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors degree and in 1962 with a Masters degree in Aero/Space Engineering. His first job was with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA., where he was a member of the Supersonic Transport design team. In 1965 he jointed TRW Systems in Clear Lake City, Texas, and became a member of the Apollo Space Program. His primary responsibility was the onboard verification of the re-entry guidance and navigation system for the Apollo spacecraft.
In 1974 the space program experienced a budget decrease, and rather than relocate back to Los Angeles, Mel was recruited into the insurance business by his agent and family member, Norman Ross. In May of 1974, he joined Sun Life of Canada, and three years later found himself in Dallas as the Sun Life branch manager. After being the branch manager for nine years and building a sizeable agency, he returned to full time production. In 1990, he was elected by the field force to the Sun Life Agent Advisor Committee. This committee is comprised of the leading agents in the company.
Mel was elected to the NAIFA-Dallas board of directors in 1994 for a three year term where he serviced as Community Service Director and Membership Retention Director. In 1997 he was elected to the Executive Committee and served as President of NAIFA-Dallas from 1999-2000. Today he serves as the chief investment officer of the NAIFA Dallas Association.
Mel is a Qualifying and Life Member of MDRT, a member of National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals where he also served on the board of directors.
Mel is a member of Congregation Shearith Israel and has served on the board of the synagogue for 10 years, served as Brotherhood President, and was named “Man of the Year” in 1988. He was also on the board of the Solomon Schechter of Dallas and a member of Rotary International. He is a licensed private pilot and has an Instrument Flight Rating.
Mel and his wife, Tanya, have been married 49 years. They have three children and twelve grandchildren.
